Helpful Food Waste Recycling Tips
Participating in the food waste recycling pilot project is not only easy, it's important. Recycling your food scraps and food soiled paper products can reduce your garbage by up to half, lessening your community's dependence on the Regional Landfill and extending its life as well as reducing greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

Here are some suggestions on recycling food and kitchen waste in your home:

beige kitchen container
Using your beige kitchen container
  • Store your kitchen container under the kitchen sink or other handy location. If you use a liner in your kitchen container, ensure it is compostable.
  • Put food waste into the kitchen container immediately to avoid attracting insects. Frequently transfer waste to your green bin.
  • Keep the lid tightly closed.
  • Clean frequently with hot water and mild biodegradable detergent especially during hot weather. Kitchen containers are also safe to be cleaned in the dishwasher.
Using your green bin
Using your green bin
  • Store your green bin with your garbage containers or in another shady spot secure from animals.
  • Put larger soiled paper products such as pizza boxes directly into your green bin.
  • Keep the lid tightly closed.
  • Roll your green bin to the curbside by 8 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Clean frequently with hot water and mild biodegradable detergent especially during hot weather.
To address possible issues such as odours, insects and clean-up
  • Line the bottom of your kitchen container with a paper towel and your green bin with newspaper to absorb moisture and odours. Remember, these materials are accepted in the program.
  • Wrap wet food waste in old newspaper.
  • Store meat and fish waste in your freezer until collection day.
  • Sprinkle vinegar, baking soda, garden lime, or biodegradable laundry detergent in your kitchen container and green bin to deodorize them.
